CrossRoads

I was browsing through a book called “The road less traveled” by Scott Peck. The very first sentence shook the ground beneath my feet. The sentence contained just 3 words, 3 very powerful words. “Life is difficult.”

So bloody true. Who said life has to be simple? We all want our lives to be perfect. When its not we start cribbing. But what is the fun if we don’t have challenges?

I was wondering what is that makes life difficult? After a little thought I realized that its “choices” is one of the primary reasons that makes life difficult.

When we think our lives are going on smoothly, we hit a cross road. In the first place it is quite difficult to take a decision because all the choices we have in front of us have pros and cons. The perfect option is never there. Like Alanis Morissette says in one of her songs: “It’s like having ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife”.

After careful consideration we take a decision on one choice. Sometimes events happen the exact same way we expect it to and the rest of the times it is a total letdown of our anticipation.

We get upset and start wondering why we never chose the other options which we had discarded. And the next time we are in another crossroad we call it a problem.

If things don’t work out the way we want it to, we still have a “choice”. A choice to either feel sad or to embrace the truth and move on or be happy that we had an enriching experience. We may lose or we may win but we will never be here again. So let us look at what we have in life and be happy; instead of feeling sad, searching for something we don’t have.

These thoughts were triggered by your mail.

"Life is ____________". The blank is what you want to fill. Every choice you make disturbs the environment around you. Hence the environment reacts. Whenever the reaction is comforting to you, the then LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, else, LIFE IS __________, difficult, frustrating, demanding, irritating and what not.

Every choice you make, makes you travel that much more in life and every time you move (irrespective of the direction) there is an experience. Every experience changes something in you. Hence you are different and not the same person you were before.

If you reflect on the experience and internalise the learning, you are aware of the change that has happened in you. If you donot reflect and look for learning in every experience, then "LIFE IS _____________", you have to fill in the blank based on your mood, post the experience. My take on LIFE is.....

LIFE is TO LIVE IT FULLY! LIFE is TO EXPERIENCE!! LIFE is TO LEARN CONTINUOUSLY!!!

  • hi,
how true! giving u a small example... today i thought life was fine.. everything in order, me- happy, family- happy, work - fine ,health-good,nice things lined up in the coming months...all's well with the world....
    AND then...
lo and behold...BWSSB decided to shut off water supply....OH MY GOD !
    well..'what's the problem' , u may ask . it is...it is...
we all hate rationing of water supply , u see...
so then i thought...'how dreadful..just when i had everything going fine..water supply had to b affected'
AND then i told myself...'its better to have a small problem like this ,than a huge one like health ,mayb'
so...what dileep has written is true...its the way we look at a problem.
what the heck...no water? i have filled up lots (if i had my way, i'd fill up cups and glasses too !) and what's more, here i am, typing a letter merrily to my 'sunshine' friends....
enjoying the moment as it is...( for those who attended the last meeting...remember my bus journey?????) well...its something like that...KEEP SMILING!!!!!!!!!!!
    bye,
    monica
